Language Proficiency
The Rhode Island Roadmap to Language Excellence is dedicated to making students proficient in English and another world language. While a dual language immersion program is the most efficient method to becoming fluent in two languages, it is important to emphasize and restructure the current language curriculum used in Rhode Island public schools today. One way to inspire students to work toward fluency in two languages is through providing proficiency incentives.
Proficiency Incentives
Seal of Biliteracy
A Seal of Biliteracy may be provided on diplomas of students who graduate with proficient knowledge of at least two world languages.
College Credit
The University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College both provide college credit to students who are able to test out of language courses. If passing these tests, the student is credited with previous language credits. More information on these programs can be found at uri.edu and ric.edu
Study Abroad Opportunities
Providing that students have met their proficiency goals, opportunities to study abroad will be provided.
Scholarship Opportunities
With the seal of biliteracy, some colleges and institutions may provide bilingual students with scholarships.
